Benetton - A Global Institution

Benetton started life back in 1963 in Treviso, Northern Italy. This was a family business that set out creating colourful knitted jumpers. In just two years in 1965 the Benetton group was formed.

Through developing a technique of dyeing the garments after they were produced and this gave inspiration to a new publicity campaign 'All the colors of the world' which was actually one of the first slogans to appear in the Benetton ads. It then evolved into “United Colors of Benetton.” The concept of united colors was such a strong one that for the first time in its history, the company adopted the slogan as its actual logo. For the first time in the history of commercial trademarks, the slogan United Colors of Benetton became a trademark.

Benetton is renowned for it's controversial and powerful advertising, touching on global issues such as Aids, the death penalty, world hunger and child labor. With well over 6,000 stores worldwide and employing over 10,000 people, Benetton is known equally for its message as well as its clothing.
