FOLLOW YOUR STAR
Happily following my husband, who, on occasion can be a star, to Monaco mirrors the life of one of the leading characters in local author Jennifer Bohnet's newly published novel. Round about there the similarity ends as I did not enter a world of 'intrigue and dangerous liaisons. Pity!
'Follow Your Star' is a romantic novel with twists and turns. Set in two contrasting locations; Monaco and the Amazon jungle, the characters lives are intertwined by family ties and dubious business interests. The geographical diversity reflects the opposite ends of the haves and have nots. Yet, both places are corrupt and corrupting. Monaco is renowned as a sunny place for shady people and Ms Bohnet does nothing to dispel this view. The exploitation of workers in the Amazon has long been a concern for those with conscience.
The characters are all three dimensional, this makes them plausible and at times one is sympathetic and at others, frustrated. It is a 'will she, won't she?' book with interesting diversions along the way.
For me, the joy was in recognising places in Monaco. I can testify to Ms Bohnet's description of the legendary Grand Prix. I have been there, done that, and in the same building as the main characters watched the race from. Her attention to detail is exactly right and her insight into the machinations of it all are right on the money.
There is a real feel good factor to reading about sun, sea and a familiar setting. I recommend it as a good curl up on the sofa winter's read.
