With the summer in full swing, we went in search for natural homemade remedies against those summer critters that become a nuisance at this time of the year.

We wanted to find a formula that was not only kind to the environment but also kind to you.

Essential oils are the true blockbusters when it comes to keeping the bugs at bay, and the ones that are most effective are:

Many of these different essential oils work especially well for specific pests and it is worth spending a little time doing some research.

Here are some of the more well known pests and essential oils that work as repellents for them:

Try this combination which is also effective for your pets too. With children it is safer to check with your doctor or chemist if they are sensitive and of course if you suffer from allergies or taking medication, it is always best to check too.

You will need:

Spray bottle (8oz or 10oz sizes work best)
Water
Witch hazel
Peppermint, clove, lavender, or lemongrass essential oil for small children, and lemon, eucalyptus, and tea tree for older kids and pets. (Lemon and eucalyptus can irritate the skin of very young children)

Create a 50/50 mix of witch hazel and water, and add 15 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Spray on arms, legs, backs, and necks.

For dogs and outdoor cats, spray a bit on their legs, tails, and around their collars. You can also dab some tea tree, eucalyptus, or citronella oil onto the outside edges of collars to warn bugs from getting comfortable. If your pet is sensitive, do check with your vet.
