Keep up with the Joneses

Welcome to a brand new month as we edge slowly slowly to summer time and a succession of interesting activities. For those who do not understand the title of my editorial, 'Keeping up with the Joneses' - this is when people who want to own the same expensive objects and do the same things as their friends or neighbours, because they are worried about seeming less important socially than they are...

Whilst I was sitting in a crowded tube in London only recently, I was aware of the people around me, some sitting, others standing, everyone deep in thought, going about their daily business. I don't know if it was because I was in London but I recall how everyone looked different and had their own style. Wonderful!

Then my thoughts turned to individualism and becoming your own person and what this actually means. I came to the conclusion that many people compromise who they are just to be accepted by others, in fear that they may not be socially accepted. This is what I call a 'no-win' situation. The power of attraction for me, is to be who you are, no matter the class, race or financial status you find yourself in, and to find the right people you would be proud to have in your life.

Can we not stop the competition amongst our peers and remember that the only person you should be in competition with, is yourself? When you look into a mirror, what do you see? What do you expect from yourself? What is it that you want to do? The first person you need to be true to, is yourself. Be your own person, be the best version of you that you can be and then... if there are those who choose to judge you for who you are not to them, then let it be... plenty more fish in the sea! Do you really want to spend endless hours with people that don't make you feel good? Life is precious, life is good. You only have one life so make it the best you can.
