Sara De Christopher is an American/Iranian artist from Los Angeles, California residing in Cannes, France. Highly influenced by two opposite cultures Sara’s language and influences have derived from the Abstract Expressionist movement, utilizing color, textures, material, and form.
Sara graduated from the California State University Northridge, California, and furthered her art education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Studying under Saul Bernstein and Suzanne Bothwell each Professors and International artist in their own right contributing greatly to her strong sense of expression.
"Thoughts evolve - there is a strong tie between earlier works and recent works. I don’t think exactly as I thought yesterday or rather, my basic idea has not changed, but my thoughts have evolved, and my modes of expression have followed them. My destination is always the same, but I work out a different route to get there. What I’m after above all is expression. My own painting is the result of a direct experience with my materials. My subject matter is everywhere.
To me, the unconscious is an important part of art. I use the process of automatism as a starting point and catalyst to call forth images. I don’t make the sketches and drawings into a final painting, but approach the canvas directly. I communicate through shapes, lines and symbols. To me the process is immediate - the more direct, the greater the possibilities of making an unfiltered statement. The painting becomes the result of my encounter with the canvas - not simply an image, but an event. For me, painting is a dynamic balance - mysterious and transcendent, yet solid and real."
