Up to a third of us are affected by cancer, either as victims, as friends or as relatives of those suffering from the disease. The brother of New Zealander Liz Taege Maynard suffers from brain tumours and Liz has long supported cancer research. She also - until Friday night - had long flowing blonde hair that she had been growing for over a year just for this night. Like Rapunzel she had a use for it beyond decoration.
For tonight Liz had organized a charity hair-cutting event. Star hairdresser Terence from The Cutting Shop would take his scissors to her locks, which would then be carefully packed off to England to be made into a wig for a cancer patient undergoing radiation therapy. At the same time the Blue Lady English Pub in Antibes helped her organise the event, with a collecting box and raffle, the prizes having been donated by local businesses.
So, fortified with a steady supply of mind-pulverising cocktails provided by Sarah at The Blue Lady, Liz submitted to the scissors in front of a pub-full of spectators. The Riviera Woman was there to record the event.
