Fascinations Geometriques
December 8th 2010
The fact that there is so little information about Evegeny Gorokhovsky leaves me to form my own opinions on the collection titled 'Fascinations Géométriques...'.
The strong use of colour, is what first drew me to look beyond the surface of the painting. The stencilled foreground gave way to traditional figures and landscapes that appear totally oblivious and unaware of peering eyes. If you have ever looked through a oneway glass door, you experience a sense of confusion before clarity begins to reveals itself. This was my experience of the artwork.
I felt that the paintings masked the truth, a sense of 'smoke and mirrors' but not to deceive but to enlighten and to expand the imagination by teasing and provoking speculation. “Now do you see what I mean?” I almost sense the painting talking back at me.
There is no clear meaning as to what the paintings represent but the artist has a true fascination and talent for geometric lines and patterns resembling a maze... the imagination will explore the possibility to find solutions or escape but there isn't a definite outcome – and indeed you may never find what you are looking for or understand what you are seeing. It is meant to challenge and raise suspicion... all cannot be what it seems. Perhaps the artist merely wishes to toy with our inquisitive minds and humors us with confusion.
But then contemporary art, is about stretching the imagination, to create conversation and stimulate intrigue. With so little knowledge of the background of Evegeny Gorokhovsky, the mystery may never unfold and remain hidden behind the mirage that is 'Fascinations Géométriques'.
I enjoy a mystery and found the collection which can be seen at gallery Carre D'or until 15th January 2011, interesting and pleasing to my mortal eye. Gallery Carré Doré supports and promotes contemporary Russian artwork that fuses art with science 'Art-Sci'.
