Gemma Andrews is an English artist who lives and works in Antibes, France. She has been painting since the age of 17 when she studied at university.

Initially, painting was just a past-time but more recently Gemma has decided to develop her skills which are completely self-taught. She enjoys experimenting with the palette knife, but often will use a wide variety of brushes to fine tune her techniques and can paint a diverse range subjects including portraits, landscapes and seascapes.

She continues to develop these techniques and has taken part in a number of exhibitions along the French riviera.

What the artist says:

"I don’t set out to produce art about one subject or another. The ideas simply develop over time; but one thing they do all have in common is power and beauty, ranging from the stunning landscape of the Côte d’azur where I currently live, to the boldness of the portrait paintings inspired by my travels.

All my works are oil paintings. Each piece is painted as realistically as possible, paying particular attention to shades and tones. Its by concentrating on these areas that give my work a dynamic and powerful essence. I always try to depict a positive message in my work, an appreciation of the world and people around us.

I have never like to explain a certain piece of work. I believe if you have made a painting and that is how you want it to be, hopefully it can speak for itself and whatever it says to the viewer. Each person takes something a little different from my paintings and I’m happy with that!"
