Art and Science Unite

The Oceanographic Museum joined the Association Monaco Project for Arts (MPA) for  « The Education for Art and Science Dinner » placed under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. The objective was to present the Galapagos Project that promotes the understanding of the importance of employing artistic skills, such as drawing and sketching, in the education of Nature and Science.

Mr Adrien Blanc-Guillon, a student from the School of Plastic Arts of Monaco will be joined by Mr Gilles Perez, a Scientist from the Oceanographic Museum, to travel within the Galapagos Islands for the whole month of February 2013 and create a contemporary sketch book on the local fauna and flora. Situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1,000 km from the South American continent, the 19 islands of the Galapagos with its 100 smaller ones have been called a unique « living museum and showcase of evolution ».

Science and Art have always been linked historically, HSH Prince Albert I would travel with expedition painters that accompanied him during all his missions. The Sketchbook will then be edited and published in Monaco.  H.E. Michel Roger, Mr Paul Masseron, Mr Carlos Jaiva, Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador and Mr Antonio Morabito, Ambassador of Italy in Monaco were among the dignitaries who joined the members of both the Monaco Project for the Arts and the Friends of the Museum.  Ms Diana Thater, Artist, curator, writer and educator, and Professor Martin Kemp, Emeritus professor of the History of Art, Oxford University and world-renowned authority on Leonardo Da Vinci were the invited guest speakers.
