Yoga Posture of the Month: VRISCHIKASANA = The Scorpion

ASTRO YOGA - Posture of the month for November
by Anette Shine

"Vrischik"  translates from sanskrit as "scorpion" and "asana", means "pose". The planet corresponding to the astrological sign "scorpio" is "Pluto" - the sign of secrets, passion, intensity & transformation. The colour is black and the element is water. Physically the sign corresponds to the sexual organs and the regeneration of the cells.

Scorpions have a sting in their tail. However often they end up stinging themselves. Scorpions are one of the most complexed & mystical signs in the zodiac. They have innate power & tenacity. They have tremendous self-control & energy and are fearless by nature.

Through meditation, the scorpion can reach its' highest potential: A transformation into the image of an eagle, who flies above all and sees the overall picture...

How to do "VRISCHIKASANA" - the Scorpion Pose:

Please note that this asana is not for beginners as it requires both strength, flexibility and concentration. It is a inverted backbend pose. If/when you feel ready to try, make sure to do it close to a wall. Come down on your knees and place your forearms on the floor. (They can be parallel or turned inward, as you prefer) Stretch your knees so you are in the "Dolphin Pose" (Downward facing dog on your elbows) Lift one leg up in the air as high as you can and gently "kick" yourself up into a balancing forearm stand with both feet against the wall. Breathe here as you build up your strength for as long as possible. This phase is part one. Later on you can begin to bend your legs, bringing your toes towards down towards your neck (representing the scorpion's sting).

Benefits of "Vrischikasana" - The Scorpion pose:

Like with all inverted postures, the blood flow towards the head improves memory, concentration & good brain functions. The pose stimulates the hair follicles in the scalp and can be used to arrest hair loss. The pose strengthens the shoulders and the core. It improves balance & spinal flexibility. As you bend your legs, and arch your back, you regenerate your hips & sexual organs to the max activating "the root lock" = "moola bandha" (the pelvic floor muscles)

What to focus on:

You concentrate on keeping the balance, activating the necessary muscles and keeping the mind & breath calm.

How to come out and a counter pose:

Come down as slowly and controlled as possible. Keep your head facing down for a while, either in "Downward Facing Dog" (Adho mukha Svanasana) or in "Childs pose" (Balasana)

Cautions:

Do not practice this posture if your blood pressure is too high, you have a history of heart disease or suffer vertigo.
