Partnership Barclays Monaco - International University of Monaco (IUM):

"Inspire and sustain the next generations"

Barclays Monaco and the International University of Monaco (IUM) set up a partnership in order to help inspire and sustain future generations.

We recognise that each of us has an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we live and work. Not only do we help young people build vital enterprise, employment and financial skills, but also empower the next generation to act as agents of positive change in their own right.

As part of our local commitment, we are working in partnership with the IUM to prepare, inspire and support future generations. This partnership will help reinforce our links in order to create synergies between the two establishments.

This initial step saw 25 students currently attending the Master in Finance programme directed by Mr Gregory Moscato hosted by Barclays Monaco key financial experts for a “day of discovery” of the financial markets and networking. The event was aimed at engaging and empowering the 25 young scholars in real working-life situations and the initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The event brought together two high profile speakers who kick-started the day with brief powerful presentations: Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou and Henk Potts. Sir Stelios focused on his business success story (Easy Group) and his numerous philanthropic activities (www.stelios.com) whilst Henk Potts, who is featured daily with his business updates on Riviera Radio (0850hrs), helped ascertain and explain the effects of macroeconomic changes on financial markets.

In the afternoon the students participated in a 2.5 hour investment thriller challenge put together by the Barclays Monaco Investment team. Aimed at testing their global outlook on financial markets this hands-on approach was also a pedagogical method aiming to sensitise the students to the necessity of a structured and responsible approach to investment and be conscious of geopolitical, monetary politics and indeed other factors impacting global markets.

The day came to close with an awards ceremony and a cocktail reception that took place in the vaults of the bank - A location that embodies the essence of banking activities. Our team was delighted to be able to use the opportunity to make a financial contribution to our IUM partner in order to help the students when they plan to visit London later this year.

Today’s collaboration and the partnership between Barclays Monaco and the IUM further underpin our commitment and ongoing desire to support the local community of the Principality.

Barclays hosted us for the “Next Generation Day”, and it was a both pleasure and a great experience to be there. Barclays Monaco gave us the opportunity to meet the Founder of Easy Jet, Stelios Haji-loannou and Henk Potts, who both offered interesting insights. We also had the opportunity to prove ourselves in a fun investment game simulation, coached by Barclays’ traders, which was a truly unique experience. Thanks again to Barclays Monaco staff for this awesome day!”

Alexandra Spasov, Msc Finance Student

"This was really a wonderful event .It was a pleasure to meet the professionals and I sincerely appreciated , as my fellows,  the opportunity to ask questions to the Senior managers about their everyday life and about technical aspects as well. The day was very well organized, with a great program combining inspirational speeches, group competition and a very warm cocktail party”

Alexandre Durandy-Turgot, MsFinance Student

The visit to Barclays was extremely inspiring. We could really feel the spirit of the place and the team was as friendly and helpful, as one can imagine. We really appreciate their effort. They also let us see the heart of the bank, and this day will remain in our hearts as well.”

Dmitri Korzun, MSFInance Student

This inspiring event, wholeheartedly prepared by the Barclays and IUM teams, is everything a student could dream of: very informative, instructive and fun.”

Soleiman El Mahmoud, MSFInance Student

This partnership between the International University of Monaco and Barclays Bank is but a continuation of an existing relationship between our two organisations, as a matter of fact several graduates of our finance programme are now on the staff at the bank. This day of induction to the activities of Barclays Bank Monaco offered to our students signals a new chapter in our association and I am extremely happy about this close link between our establishments and about the commitment of this financial institution to the training and mentoring of young people. The programme prepared for this one day event was quite extraordinary and I am certain that it will be etched in the memory of our Finance Master’s students for a very long time.”

Dr Jean-Philippe Muller, General Manager, International University of Monaco

At Barclays we recognise that each of us has an opportunity to make a positive difference to the communities in which we live and work. The partnership with the IUM for the next generation has been designed with the students’ development in mind; this program will equip the scholars with essential interpersonal tools for furthering their careers and entrepreneurial aspirations and will also provide them with an insight into some of the key fundamentals of investment in an interactive and engaging way.”
